about

‘You will be home before the leaves have fallen from the trees.’ (Kaiser Wilhelm II speaking to German troops in August 1914).

‘It takes 15,000 casualties to train a major general.’ (Ferdinand Foch, French Army)

An attempt to take the intractable conflict that was the Battle of Verdun (21 February – 18 December 1916) out of the hands of the French and German army leaders and focus on experiences of lower ranked men on both sides who fell victim to stubborn and ill-fated decisions.

Inspired by a visit to the Verdun region and the following accounts:

- Alistair Horne : The Price Of Glory
- Sylvain-Eugene Raynald : Le Drame du Fort de Vaux
- Fritz von Unruh : Opfergang
- Ernst Jünger : Sturm

credits

released February 21, 2016
